Grief is a natural healing process that can be enhanced by professional counseling. Hospice By The Bay offers grief counseling, support and guidance for people who are grieving or anticipating the death of a loved one. This is accomplished by creating a safe place for expressing and normalizing feelings of grief and diminishing a sense of isolation.
Individual counseling appointments and support groups are available to hospice families, as well as to the general public.
Individual Counseling
Hospice families are offered six individual counseling sessions at no charge, which are usually held weekly. Counseling may be continued for up to one year on a sliding-scale fee structure. Community members who are anticipating or have experienced the death of a family member or loved one are also eligible for counseling services on a sliding-scale fee structure*.
Support Groups
Hospice By The Bay also offers grief support groups to provide family members and loved ones with an opportunity for emotional support, sharing of feelings, education about the grief process and ways to cope with loss. Both day and evening groups are offered. Most groups meet once a week for several weeks in succession and others are on a "drop-in" basis. Hospice families may attend the group at no charge; fees for community members vary according to duration of the group*.
Hospice Youth Program
A unique program is offered to children in grief from ages 5 to 18. Grief support groups are offered as well as individual and family counseling. The creative arts are used extensively both in the groups and in individual counseling. We also offer school presentations both for children and faculty, and on-site grief support groups at schools. Hospice By The Bay's bereavement counselors specialize in the particular needs of children and teens and also offer a Youth Bereavement Camp each summer.
